Officials: Pittsburgh International Airport loses power after “extraordinary” storm causes surge

(Pittsburgh, PA) Strong storms swept through the Pittsburgh area yesterday, leaving behind a trail of damage and temporarily knocking out power at Pittsburgh International Airport. Power went out around 3:30 p.m.

Pittsburgh International Airport reported an outage after the storm produced what it described as an “extraordinary” power surge. In a social media post, airport officials said a lightning strike hit Duquesne Light’s electrical system.

Despite the outage, the airfield and air traffic control tower were not affected, allowing flights to continue arriving and departing. No flights were canceled, according to an airport spokesperson.

Airport officials said partial service was restored within about an hour, and full power was restored in less than 90 minutes.

Duquesne Light, which serves Allegheny and Beaver counties, reported more than 4,000 customer outages as of 11:15 p.m. Thursday. At the height of the storm, more than 40,000 customers were without power. West Penn Power also reported thousands of outages across its service area.

A message posted on Duquesne Light’s website said crews were actively responding to outages, assessing damage and working to provide estimated restoration times.

PennDOT message boards and traffic cameras along the Parkway East are out of service after fiber optic cables were vandalized.

Father in custody after leaving infant and 5-year-old in hot car while he went for a massage in Springdale

(Springdale, PA) A man is facing charges after police say he left a 5-year-old boy and a 6-month-old girl inside a hot vehicle while he received a massage in Springdale on Tuesday.

According to court documents obtained by KDKA-TV, Jerry Rempuszewski was arrested outside Golden Wellness Body Work Massage after officers removed the children from the vehicle. Police said temperatures inside the car may have exceeded 100 degrees.

Officers were called to the area of Glenn’s Frozen Custard shortly after 3 p.m. following reports of children left unattended in a vehicle. When they arrived, they found the two children inside.

According to a criminal complaint, the 5-year-old was conscious and alert, while the 6-month-old appeared red, was sweating heavily and seemed unresponsive. An officer was able to enter the vehicle and determined the infant was still breathing.

Police said the vehicle’s alarm sounded when the officer entered, prompting Rempuszewski to come outside, where he was taken into custody.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video and determined the children had been left in the vehicle for approximately 36 minutes with the windows partially open, according to police.

Employees at the massage business told investigators that Rempuszewski entered without an appointment and paid for a 30-minute massage.

Police said Rempuszewski is the father of the infant and the stepfather of the 5-year-old. Both children were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital for treatment, and their mother was notified.

Rempuszewski is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on charges including endangering the welfare of children, leaving an unattended child in a motor vehicle and recklessly endangering another person.

Pennsylvania state senator hosts roundtable on nursing shortage at Carlow University

(Pittsburgh, PA) State Senator Devlin Robinson led a roundtable discussion at Carlow University yesterday focused on the nursing shortage and potential solutions to meet rising healthcare demand.

Participants discussed factors contributing to the shortage, including fewer people entering the nursing profession, increased demand for care and retirements among current nurses. Carlow University officials said the school is working to attract more students into healthcare programs, particularly nursing.

Carlow President Kathy Humphrey said the university is developing three-year, 90-credit bachelor’s degree programs in fields such as healthcare management and healthcare data analytics. She said reducing credit requirements would lower costs for students and allow them to enter the workforce more quickly.

The university has also launched a surgical technology program in response to staffing shortages that have contributed to canceled procedures. Officials said Carlow is also working with hospitals to provide scholarships and expand training opportunities.

In addition, the university has introduced a pilot program allowing high school students to earn college credit while preparing for healthcare careers.

Former NFL player Terrelle Pryor charged with drug possession in Monroeville

(Monroeville, PA) Former NFL player and Jeannette High School standout Terrelle Pryor is facing a drug possession charge following a traffic stop in Monroeville, according to court paperwork.

According to a criminal complaint, a Monroeville Police officer was patrolling near Mosside Boulevard shortly before midnight on May 24th when he observed a black Mercedes with a tinted driver’s side window speeding past.

The complaint states that officers later stopped the vehicle on Interstate 376. Inside, 36-year-old Pryor was reportedly found lying in the back seat in what the officer described as an “odd” position and “breathing so heavily I could see the rise and fall of his chest through his shirt.”

Police said officers observed the barrel of a rifle on the floor of the vehicle and instructed Pryor to exit the car.

According to the complaint, officers later saw a clear plastic bag containing suspected MDMA in Pryor’s hand when he retrieved his wallet to provide identification.

Pryor is a former standout at Jeannette High School and Ohio State University who was selected in the NFL supplemental draft and played for multiple teams in the league.

He has had prior legal issues, including a 2021 guilty plea to criminal mischief in connection with a domestic dispute. He also previously pleaded guilty in a separate case involving a stabbing incident, for which he received probation on a harassment charge. He was also sued earlier this year over his involvement in a crash in the South Side Flats neighborhood.
